From the recording Traces of Jesus

Although I recorded this song back in 1999, I did not "release" it until 2007 as part of a Spirit Wing Records compilation CD. It gained a measure of attention and received the Catholic music "Unity Award" as the 2008 Country (Gospel) Song of the Year. Very humbling. The song came from an experience I had one day when driving with a co-worker to a meeting. We had worked together for about two years and as we were talking, I mentioned something about going to church later that evening. My co-worker looked at me, kind of surprised, and said, "You're a Christian?". Wow. We worked together for two years and he had no idea I was a Christian. Something wrong with that picture. Something very wrong. I vowed that day that no one would ever again be surprised that I'm a Christian. My life would begin to speak the Gospel. Flawed at times, yes, but speaking all the same.

Lyrics

Street corner preacher, a lonely old man,Looking at everyone just as close as he canSome say he’s a prophet, or a little insane;I got close enough that I could hear him say:
Let me look into your eyes,And I will see down into your soulI could tell you everything about your life,But what I’m really looking for are traces of Jesus.
I try to get past him in the midst of the crowd,But then I hear him call me like no one’s aroundA little ashamed, though I pray every night;Still not quite sure of just what he might find
Let me look into your eyes,And I will see down into your soulI could tell you everything about your life,But what I’m really looking for are traces of Jesus.
So many questions, so little time;Just trying to do the best I canI know there’ll come a time, come a day,When the angel of the Lord says to me:
Let me look into your eyes,And I will see down into your soulI could tell you everything about your life,But what I’m really looking for,All I’m really looking for are traces of Jesus
