Kenya Oh Kenya

It is good that I am keeping notes on my computer as I journey each day. There is no time to post everything as my time to get online is extremely limited. It most likely will not be until I return to San Antonio on/about July 13 that I will be able to post a journal of sorts.

For now, though, I just want to answer a few questions that I've received via e-mail.

Biggest surprise: virtually all adults have cell phones, even in the villages. And yes, during Mass in one town, a cell phone went off.

Most interesting thing I have eaten: having vowed that I would try every thing offered to me, the most interesting thing so far was sauteed cow intestine. It was tasty, actually, though a bit chewy. At least I was smart enough to wait until I ate what was on my plate before I asked what it was.

Biggest impression: JOY!

Country: everywhere it is beautiful.

Poverty: everywhere. I have not been to any area of Kenya that was not enveloped in poverty.

Interesting thing about how the Catholic Faith is celebrated: after Communion that have a "Thanksgiving Dance", thanking God for the personal encounter He has blessed them with by coming to us in the Eucharist. I have been involved in two such dances so far.

Favorite memory so far: at an outdoor Mass I was the guest of honor and the 'Thanksgiving Dance' consisted of children singing a special song for me and during the song they invited me to come dance with them. Yes, it is on video somewhere and I will try to get a copy.

Funniest moment so far: dancing Swahili-style with a group of nuns. Yes... nuns. :)

Still much to do over the next 10 days and then I fly back to America. Please keep the prayers coming!
